(I do not support Anti-Semitism nor do deny holocaust, but want to ask this question)
I am not denying holocaust is a sad and horrible event. But why if someone is of opinion that it did not happen (We may claim it did happen but he is entitled to his opinion no matter how wrong he is) is put in jail in Europe. Why anti-semitism is a crime? Afterall it just an opinion of that person (no matter how wrong it may be).

Agreed. Even crazy, toxic people should be able to speak freely. The crazier they are, the easier their ideas are to discard. And if we’re choosy about which ideas are allowed expression, we might suppress some useful or even crucial ones.

i wasn’t aware they were crimes. i think it’s a crime under the hate crime laws to harm someone because of their race or religion. i don’t think it’s illegal to be dumb.

Holocaust denial is not a crime in UK.l do agree it is utterly horrific that people go to jail for denying it.It is really no-one business but ones own.It amounts to nothing more than pandering to the Jewish crowd.They love it that a prison sentence awaits anyone for denial.

Free speech is only free to those who have the responsibility. And responsible people are not those who deny the holocaust or spout anti-semitic statements.
It is one of the fine prints on free speech that many overlook. They take the term ‘freedom of speech’ literally. If everyone went around saying what they liked, violence would inevitably occur by those who are irresponsible.

I don’t believe Holocaust denial is a crime in Britain , it is in Germany,but I am always bemused when people say we have free speech in this country .We don’t. Have you seen the latest measure big brother is inflicting on us ? All phone calls Emails and other communications of all of us will be recorded and kept so that the police and even local councils can monitor us . That will happen from April . Free speech ! Don’t make me laugh.

Good question. It’s a tribute to the freedom of speech and freedom of the press that we have in the US that not all nations have.
Similarly, I’ve heard of cases (outside of the US) where publishers were in legal trouble for publishing anti-homosexuality passages. The books were the Old Testament and the New Testament. Amazing.
Toxic idiots do deserve freedom of speech. That’s the price we pay.

We have never had freedom of speech here in the UK, we only think we have it. There is nowhere in British law that mentions it and no laws have been made to enshrine it in our legal canon. We do not have it.

Is this in Germany?
As far as I know, Germany is the only western country that makes Holocaust denial a crime.
They’re obviously very sensitive to this issue, considering their role in the Holocaust. They are concerned that a rise in antisemitism will cause the international community to re-associate them with the Holocaust, or even cause a new Holocaust to occur.

You are right up to a point. Freedom of speech means that a person does have the right to think and debate that point, however right or wrong it is.
Where the line is drawn however, is when freedom of speech turns into incitement to racism/violence.
I can for example say that I think one social group has had a detrimental effect on the infrastructure of a particular town due to uncontrolled migration.
I can’t say that the same social group is disgusting/evil/backward/etc and should be wiped off the face of the earth.
I know that is an extreme example, but you get my point?

religious hatred is an offense….but anti-jewish hatred does not seem to have the same level of protection as anti-islamic hatred
or else the students being spat on in manchester uni would have protection from their muslim attackers
of the jews victimised in birmingham by muslims would be protected
and holocaust denial is usually the preserve of extreme racists who like ot cause offense to jews by pretending that they are attention seeking when the holocaust is mentioned
those who deny the holocaust are inherently racist …..taught in the main to hate jews in their mosques in the third world and in britain ……it is hard to compete with such ignorance or determined hatred
but should a white european suggest that muslims follow a violent religion then all hell breaks out…..and the people who complain about his unfair comments threaten to riot …or kill him etc …….what was he saying …..oh yes that they followed a violent religion
and as muslims are often so keen on freedom of speech ….although most live in countries where there is none ..why deny this man or others the opportunity to air their views?
if muslims don’t like the laws protecting Holocaust victims in the west ….they could always stay in their third world countries where they could be as racist against jews as they like

Antisemitism is not a crime. The crime would be something like incitement of racial hatred not antisemitism per se.
The problem seems to be the re-action of those targeted by such speech.
Jews tend not to threaten and riot and commit violence despite immense provocation. Certain other religions turn to violence at the merest mention of anything they deem to be an insult, even if it is not.

Its not illegal in America to hate the Jews. But it is wrong, it is not illegal to say the holocaust never happened. What are you going to go to jail for saying that? I feel bad for all the holocaust’s victims, but that happened over 67 years ago, we have to move on and let their souls rest in peace. Nothing like that is ever going to happen again, oh wait, Gaza. That’s right. Their is a Genocide on the Palestinian people in Gaza/West Bank, Darfur, and many other places. We got to stop talking about what happened over 70 years ago and start talking about the current atrocities committed by the war criminal ethnic cleansers in Darfur, Israelis in Gaza/West Bank, and in Southeast Asian countries like Myanmar, etc.

Holocaust denial in the USA is not a crime. The only time it is not allowed is in defense of some other crime. For example, you can not testify in court that your criminal actions were justified because of all the "Falsehoods about the Holocaust." The judges have made judicial note that the Holocaust is historical fact and any attempt to defend yourself based upon denial of the Holocaust is not allowed in US courts.
Anti-semitism is also not a crime, unless you act upon it and cause harm to Jews because of your views. Then your actions become a "hate crime." For example, you can spout all the anti-semitism you want but if you act on it and burn down a synagogue, the burning of the synagogue is considered a hate crime resulting in greater punishment than just plain old arson.
Freedom of speech exists, Holocaust denial is legal, Anti-semitism is legal. The only time you can get in trouble for it is if you endorse violence or some sort of "action" against Jews as you speak. That comes under the heading of "inciting a riot" which is illegal no matter how you do it.

Freedom of speech is one thing – racism of any kind, whether it is antisemitism or not, is quite another. Deliberately causing emotional pain, verbal bullying and inciting hate crime is not freedom of speech.
Holocaust denial is usually linked to other behaviours which most reasonable, rational people find unacceptable and abhorrent. That is why in places like Germany and Austria it is considered to be a crime. Having experienced one generation succumbing to the insanity of antisemitism they do not want to see another.
