I understand why societies can be wrongfully ignorant of blacks because of their skin color or gays because their lifestyles counter traditional teachings/perceptions.

But why Jews? Why have they been persecuted so much in history?

Because Christianity regarded them as ‘the murders of Jesus’ for centuries.

Anti-Semitism is essentially an European-Christendom phenomenon. No jew bashing out of that area until the 2WW.

PS: I laugh at your negatives. Please check your history. Try to learn where and how the word ‘pogrom’ came from, about the expulsions in Spain and about the generalized persecution in Christian Europe during the Middle Ages and early Modern Era. While, at the same time, they were essentially not disturbed anywhere else until the end of the 2WW. Hitler took his Anti-Semitism from the Christian roots of Europe, not from anywhere else.

I’m just wondering what kind of Anti-Semitism there might be in first-world countries like the States or the UK toward jews. If you have experienced any, what form has it taken?

I believe that it started with Nazi Germany (in modern history anyway). Hitler viewed the jewish people living in Germany as a threat to his government movement. He therefore started a hate campaign against them that culminated in the cruel death of many people.

In regard to your scapegoat that you relate Anti-Semitism with Islam. According to Economist magazine, In Russia, some of the prominent ministers anti semitists because they believe that Jews were responsible to destroy the Soviet Union (Russian Empire).

There is huge anti-semitism in Russia, including some of the prominent ministers in Putin’s Gov are anti-semetic. Russia is not a Muslim country, it is a Christian Orthodox country. I d’nt know how limited ur general knowledge is. By the way many Jew live in Muslim countries as minorities, for example, Moroco, Turkey, in six Central Asian Muslims states ( Russian speaking) and in South Asia (particularly in India where 2nd largest group of Muslims live). If Muslims were anti-semtists, Jews in Muslim countries would have part of history. Muslims have not butchered them as Christian Europeans did in past.

Religion is a fact of life and the denomination depends on your social context, upbringing, conviction and creed. It is everyone’s own choice to deep within believe that there is a power greater than humanity that is the cause and source of life. The name you give that power is then just the name your social environment gives it. But this whole thing is not about faith anyway – it’s about power, as in any problem, conflict or war.

Jews have always been picked on, all through the centuries, since the diaspora. They are an easy target: Their religion is a very family and comunity-oriented affair, so they seem to the outsider to always congregate and celebrate in their own houses or synagogues. There are no open displays of their religion like processions or artwork. So they are perceived by ignorant and paranoid people as "scheming and plotting" and "up to no good".

Because they were people of 2nd class and considered "heathens" in the medieval Europe, they were not allowed to work in jobs such as smith, carpenter, mason etc. The only job they were OK to do was the one the christians weren’t allowed to: money lending! So they became influential and rich. Which made the christians hate and envy then even more…

This mistrust, underlying hate and pettyness has lingered in Europe ever since. It has absolutely ZERO!!! to do with some radical muslims who are just jumping on the band wagon for completely different reasons. They hate Israel!

A note on your statistics: Those 70% Germans may well compare Israel with Nazi Germany. But are they anti-semitic? All they are saying is that the Israel people should know better after what their ancestors had to go through (who can gauge that better than the Germans) and not to treat the Palestines – women, children, old folks etc – as if they were people of 2nd class (btw. Israel used to be Palestine, until 1947)

But I’m rambling. this is a very, very complex topic and can’t really be exhausted in this form. It is a very controversial as well, as "cmbc587" has clearly shown. Final thought: anti-semitism is the tool of populist demagogues who exploit the ignorance of stupid people and has always been. Conclusion: There are either more demagogues or more stupid people around these days.

Why anti-semitism is a crime? Why holocaust denial is a crime? After all its a matter of freedom of speech

I am not denying holocaust is a sad and horrible event. But why if someone is of opinion that it did not happen (We may claim it did happen but he is entitled to his opinion no matter how wrong he is) is put in jail in Europe. Why Anti-Semitism is a crime? Afterall it just an opinion of that person (no matter how wrong it may be).

Labels are for cans, and they can be as descriptive or arcane and complex as you want to make them, but your understanding is basically correct.

Anti-Zionists oppose any Jewish theocratic state, such as Israel and want to see a secular state in Palestine which affords citizenship and equal rights to Jews, Moslems and Christians alike without regard to race or nationality.

Anti-Semites are racists who hate persons of jewish religion or ancestry. Even though there are other Semitic peoples, and Judaism is a religion and not a race, this is the common usage of the term.

it did not have any immediate effect. However, in the 1640s, when parliament was running England, the Puritans, led by Oliver Cromwell, allowed Jews to settle in England again because they believed that the Ssecond Coming of Christ would not occur until the jews had been converted. And you can’t convert the jews if they aren’t there. So indirectly the Reformation was the cause of jews once more settling in england. Because without the Reformation, Puritanism would not have been able to establish itself in england.
