If Judaism was the first religion, then explain to me why Zorostrianism is an older monotheism?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

I heard someone claim Judaism was the first religion, that is grossly inaccurate on many levels. Zorostrianism isnt even the first religion.

1) Zoroastianism is dualistic NOT monotheistic
2) Zoroastianism originated around 600 to 800 BCE Judaism around 1300-1500 BCE. So, in other words judaism is between 500 and a 1000 years OLDER than Zoroastianism, not the other way around!

Any good suggestions for books on the basics of Judaism especially relating to conversion to Judaism ?

Monday, July 19th, 2010

I am looking to learn more about Judaism but I find on the internet there is just so much and I am looking for a book that focuses on the main most important parts of judaism. This could be a basic book but one also involving conversion because I am looking to find out more to potentially convert.

Becoming a jew by Lamm
To Be A Jew by Donin
This Is My God by Wouk

are a three books any Orthodox rabbi will require.

Honestly though, converts are treated like crap in jewish social circles.

What’s the difference between judaism and christianity?

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

I know the super basic things like Hanukkah and that they have bar-mitzvahs and stuff but could somebody go a little bit further? I’m Catholic, so I know what most christians believe but is it very similar to judaism? Just wondering.

answer: actually Christian beliefs are very different than Jewish beliefs.

JUDAISM/ISLAM
- says that no human can ever die for the sins of others
CHRISTIANITY
- says that Jesus died for the sins of mankind

JUDAISM
- says that all humans are born pure, and innocent
CHRISTIANITY
- some say that all humans are born with ‘original sin’.

JUDAISM
- says that G-d would never allow/enable a ‘virgin birth’
CHRISTIANITY/ISLAM
- says that Mary gave birth, though a virgin

JUDAISM
- says that no man gets a ’second coming’
CHRISTIANITY/ISLAM
- says that Jesus will have a ’second coming’

JUDAISM/ISLAM
- says that every human should speak directly to G-d
CHRISTIANITY
- Jesus claims in the ‘new testament’ that the ‘only way’ to G-d is via him

JUDAISM/ISLAM
- says G-d is one, indivisible, cannot be separated into three aspects/incarnations
CHRISTIANITY
- some sects speaks of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit

JUDAISM
- says that we are ALL equally G-d’s children
CHRISTIANITY
- says that Jesus was ‘god’s son’ above all others
ISLAM
- prophets are perfect and have never sinned

JUDAISM
- has no concept of ‘hell’
CHRISTIANITY
- *some* Christians believe non-believers go to ‘hell’
ISLAM
- most Jews and Christians and all non-Jews/non-Christians go to hell

JUDAISM
- has no ‘devil’, the jewish ‘Satan’ is just an ordinary angel, under G-d’s control
CHRISTIANITY/ISLAM
- describes ‘Satan’ as a devil and ‘fallen’ angel

JUDAISM
- the ‘messiah’ will be a normal, mortal man who must fulfill all the jewish messianic prophecies in one normal, mortal lifetime
CHRISTIANITY
- Jesus was the ‘messiah’ and will fulfill the prophecies when he ‘returns’
ISLAM
- believes Jesus was special but not a son of G-d and less a prophet than Mohammad

JUDAISM
- says that the righteous of ALL faiths will reach ‘gan eden’ or ‘garden of eden’.
CHRISTIANITY
- some Christians insist that only those who ‘know Christ’ can reach heaven
ISLAM
- some Jews and Christians will reach Paradise, Muslims reach paradise and have it better than Jews and Christians

JUDAISM
- forbids Jews from trying to convert anyone to Judaism
CHRISTIANITY
- believes in actively ‘witnessing’ and encouraging people to convert to Christianity
ISLAM
- all must convert to Islam or pay a fine to remain Christian or Jewish and live as 2nd class citizens (all others must convert or die)

JUDAISM
- The Torah remains unchanged
CHRISTIANITY
- differences from the original Torah
ISLAM
-claims the Torah and Christian bible were corrupted (with no proof)

JUDAISM/ISLAM
- no concept of original sin
CHRISTIANITY
- some sects of Christianity believe in “original sin” to justify the need for a savior. Others believe that humankind cannot keep from sinning and requires a savior to cleanse them.

Thanks Paperback for the majority of this with some tweaking by Qua Patet Orbis and Myself.

What are the most significant texts of Hasidic Judaism?

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Obviously, all the central texts of judaism are important. I also imagine that the Tanya and the Likutey Moharan would make the top of many lists of Hasidic works. What other specifically Hasidic writings are highly regarded?

As someone else pointed out, the Zohar is the foundational text of all chasidim. The Tanya is Chabad Lubabavitch. Many consider "loobies" separate from other chasidim. There are many, many sects of chasidim

Kosher struggle: Israeli women vs sexist Judaism

Monday, July 12th, 2010

For generations Jews have come to touch the stones of the holiest jewish site, the Western Wall. But over the years the area has become increasingly dangerous for women. They can only pray in an area one fifth the size of the men’s and in recent months have been attacked with chairs, rocks and vegetables, called derogatory names and even dragged along the ground.
